Sri Lanka, July 16 -- Protecting mangroves is a crucial step to lowering planet-warming carbon emissions. These ecosystems store up to 1,000 tonnes of carbon per hectare in their biomass and soils.
Under the 'Vanaspathi' National Programme, mangrove forests were also protected as forest reserves.
In the Ampara district, the Palakuda, Annamalai 1 Mangrove, and Annamalai 2 mangrove forests were declared as forest reserves. In the Puttalam district, the Marawala, Wavulkale, Marambattiya, Kusala, Marawala 1, Marawala 2, Marawala 3 and Karukapayan 2 mangrove forests were declared as forest reserves.
