Sri Lanka, Feb. 24 -- The Consumer Affairs Authority's Gampaha district office seized 7,500 kg of expired dried chillies which had been imported for Ramadan and was stored in a warehouse in Wattala.
The owner was fined Rs.100,000 after pleading guilty in the Wattala Magistrate's Court.
Detroyed at the Kerawalapitiya dump yard at the businessman's expense. The consignment, which had expired in 2024, was meant for Ramadan and was being sold on the streets after re-packaging.
The raid followed a tip-off to Consumer Affairs Authority Chairman Hemantha Samarakoon. The operation was led by Gampaha District head Udaya Namalgama, under the supervision of Director Asela Bandara and Gampaha district secretary Lalinda Gamage.
