Sri Lanka, Aug. 26 -- Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said the government will officially register upcountry Tamils as the 'Malayaga People' in their birth and other official documents, marking a significant step in recognizing the community's identity.

In a statement on social media, Minister Herath said the government is systematically implementing legal reforms to protect the rights of Malayaga Tamils, including access to housing, land, education, health, and transportation facilities.

He highlighted the Hatton Declaration as the framework for these measures and noted that, while arrangements were made on August 3 to provide legal houses to about 4,200 people in Bandarawela, minor technical delays occurred.
