Nairobi, April 29 -- Tension gripped a residential block along Kisauni Road in Nairobi West on Wednesday after residents accused a developer of endangering their lives by excavating land next to their apartment building.

Residents of Park West Apartments said construction on the neighbouring plot had interfered with the foundation of their building, despite weeks of complaints to the developer.

Their fears escalated on Tuesday night when one of the balconies collapsed, just days after the apartment's perimeter wall gave way.

Tenants said the excavation was being carried out too close to the building, weakening its foundation amid the ongoing heavy rains in the city.
