Uganda, May 14 -- The Uganda Law Society has announced a fundraising drive for a Sovereignty Defence Fund worth more than Shs2.3 billion aimed at supporting what it described as a lawful and professional defence of the Constitution.

Speaking at the society's offices in Kamwokya, ULS Vice President Anthony Asiimwe said the fund would support public awareness campaigns, legal action and coordination with civic groups both within and outside Uganda.

"The reason we are doing this, you realize, in most cases, all the laws that are passed, the members of the public are never educated, they are never aware. Yet this is the role of government," Mr Asiimwe said.
