Uganda, May 16 -- The Ruwenzori Diocese has unveiled plans to introduce a formal retirement benefits scheme for clergy members and church workers, in a move church leaders say is aimed at ensuring dignified retirement after years of service.

The proposal was announced during the opening of the 18th diocesan synod at Kyebambe Girls' Secondary School in Fort Portal on Thursday, where church leaders and retirement experts described the initiative as one of the first church-based retirement schemes of its kind in Uganda.

Ruwenzori Diocese Bishop Reuben Kisembo said the diocesan synod would discuss clergy and church teachers' welfare, including plans to strengthen and formalise an existing savings arrangement.
