Uganda, May 12 -- Households in Kabarole District are taking malnutrition into their own hands, setting up kitchen gardens and village nutrition groups to make sure children get enough nutritious food at home.

Men are now working alongside women as nutrition champions, a shift from previous years when feeding and childcare were left mostly to women.

Private sector players and civil society groups are also pushing the growing and eating of indigenous foods, while village associations are promoting value addition and better preservation so families can store food longer and cut food insecurity.

Under the new approach, every household is expected to keep a kitchen garden stocked with a variety of foods essential for children's growth.
