Uganda, April 9 -- A sewage spill from Kenya has contaminated several water sources in Busia, exposing hundreds of residents to the risk of waterborne diseases.
The pollution originates from a poorly managed system at the Busia Kenya Customs Department, with wastewater flowing into communities in Maranchi, Mugungu and Nangwe in the Eastern Division of Busia Municipality.
Local leaders say the sewage has formed a stream that has been discharging for more than two weeks, flowing from the Kenyan customs premises through Soko Mujinga market and downstream into water sources used by residents.
Francis Juma Odero, a councillor and Speaker of Busia Municipal Council, said on April 8 that several community springs have been contaminated.
