Sri Lanka, Oct. 8 -- The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the establishment of a dedicated Wildlife Department office at Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport in Hambantota.
The decision comes in response to repeated incidents of wild elephants and other animals trespassing onto airport premises and crossing access roads, which have posed threats to infrastructure and disrupted airport operations. The damages caused have also led to significant repair costs for Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Pvt.) Limited.
