Sri Lanka, Feb. 17 -- A wild elephant that roamed in Thanamalwila in search of food had drowned yesterday in an abandoned well, which was about 30ft deep and, its narrowness prevented the elephant from moving about and even raising its trunk.

Wildlife officers from the Kitulkote wildlife office rushed to the scene on information from the public to find that it was dead. Residents of the area told the wildlife officers that it had been frequenting the area for several days.

Wildlife officers said the jumbo was seven feet tall and about 20 years old. Veterinary Medical Officer of Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home was scheduled to visit the scene yesterday to hold the postmortem examination.
