Sri Lanka, Aug. 6 -- A varsity student who pleaded guilty of selling hashish and smuggled cigarettes to his fellow students was fined Rs.410,000 by Kuliyapitiya Magistrate Mihil Chiranthana Satharasinghe yesterday.

The suspect was a resident of Balangoda and a second year student of the North Western University.

Police had filed charges against him on possessing 254grams of Hashish and 500 foreign cigarettes smuggled into the country and selling them in violation of the Tobacco Tax Ordinance.

Police told court that the marshal who searched the hostels of the university had recovered the stock of hashish and foreign cigarettes and during investigation of his complaint arrested the suspect who had been carrying on the racket since long....
