Srilanka, Aug. 1 -- An unrest was reported inside Mahara Prison, prompting authorities to deploy additional security forces to the area.

Police said several special police teams were dispatched to assess and manage the situation inside the prison.

Security was also tightened around the prison, with Police and the Special Task Force (STF) deployed to maintain order and prevent any escalation.

Seven inmates who sustained injuries during the unrest were admitted to the Ragama Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Hospital sources confirmed that one of the injured inmates later succumbed to his injuries.

A dispute between inmates and prison officers had reportedly led to the tense situation in the Mahara Prison this evening (01).
