Sri Lanka, Aug. 5 -- The Jaffna Magistrate's Court has imposed fines totalling Rs. 400,000 on two medical institutions for violating the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Act, including possessing expired medicines and overcharging patients for laboratory tests.

The cases were filed by the CAA's Jaffna District Investigation Officers following inspections carried out in July.

During a raid on Northern Central Hospitals (Pvt) Ltd in Thirunelvely on July 29, investigators discovered expired eye surgery medicines, expired Ether Liquid and Hydrogen Peroxide, as well as expired surgical equipment. The institution pleaded guilty to three charges and was fined Rs. 100,000 on each count, amounting to a total fine of Rs. 300,000.
