Srilanka, July 12 -- The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has strongly criticised the government's reported move to extend the retirement age of higher court judges, alleging that the proposal is politically motivated and poses a threat to democracy.

In a statement, SLPP General Secretary and Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam described the proposal as a "despicable and shameless" attempt aimed at serving political interests, claiming that there is significant public opposition to the move.

He said the SLPP has consistently opposed the proposal, arguing that it would deal a serious blow to the country's democratic institutions.
