Colombo, Oct. 24 -- The government of Sri Lanka has officially informed the Office of the UN High Commission for Human Rights (OHCHR) that it is opposed to an international mechanism to address human rights violations as such mechanisms create divisions among communities in Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament today.

However, she said the government has assured the OHCHR to set up a domestic mechanism.

"The government will work with international organisations while focusing on a domestic mechanism to deal with human rights violations," the Premier said at the same time.
