Sri Lanka, Oct. 20 -- From November 1, shoppers across the country will need to pay for plastic bags and containers at stores, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) announced, in a move aimed at reducing single-use plastics.

Under the new regulation, small polythene bags often called "silly bags" will no longer be complimentary. Retailers will charge customers for each bag or container provided during purchases.

Authorities are urging consumers to adopt reusable bags and containers ahead of the change, both to avoid additional costs and to contribute to national efforts to combat plastic pollution.
