Sri Lanka, Sept. 15 -- The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) has urged the public to remain vigilant against sextortion, an online crime in which perpetrators threaten to share intimate images or videos unless victims meet their demands.

Sextortion can target anyone and may begin through social media, messaging apps, dating platforms or online games. Perpetrators often build trust before obtaining intimate material and then demand money, more images or other favours.

With the rise of generative AI, criminals can also create explicit deepfake images and use them to threaten victims.
