Sri Lanka, Sept. 8 -- The mandatory seat belt regulation on expressways will be strictly enforced from September 19, Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake said in Parliament today.

The Minister said both front-seat and rear-seat passengers travelling in vehicles on expressways are required to wear seat belts.

He explained that the implementation of the regulation had been postponed several times, with vehicle owners being given multiple grace periods to install or repair seat belts in their vehicles.

However, the Minister stressed that the regulation will be strictly enforced from September 19, and no further excuses or extensions will be granted after that date.
