Sri Lanka, Sept. 10 -- Schoolchildren will soon have lighter school bags with the introduction of a new modular education system, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament today.

She said the new system would focus on using smaller textbooks and activity books, with some materials being kept in classrooms to reduce the number of books children have to carry to and from school.

"We cannot totally digitise education, but we will see to it that children have a lesser number of textbooks," the Prime Minister said.

She said the reforms were aimed at making education more convenient for students while reducing the physical burden of carrying several textbooks every day.
