Sri Lanka, Sept. 22 -- Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath told Parliament today that Sri Lankan national Sivarasa Anojan has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia following an appeal by the Saudi prosecution.

The Minister said an appeal submitted by Sri Lanka on behalf of Anojan had been rejected.

According to Herath, the Saudi prosecutor had appealed for Anojan to be prosecuted under Shariya law rather than under the country's cybercrime legislation. Following the appeal, the death sentence was imposed.

The Minister said the Sri Lankan Government was continuing diplomatic interventions in the case and was taking steps to obtain legal advice from both Sri Lankan and Saudi legal experts.
