Protests with burning torches
Sri Lanka, Aug. 12 -- Residents of several areas in Mahiyangana including Rideemaliyedda, and Nagadiwa Scheme on Monday night (10) staged a massive protest holding burning torches accusing the government of neglecting the threat of wild elephants.
They pointed out that the prominent leaders of the government promised to resolve the issue within six months of coming into power, but they have turned a blind eye to it although nearly two years have elapsed.
They pointed out that herds of wild elephants raid the villages and destroy cultivated land and that they are living in constant fear of any possible danger of their life.
They said they expected the protest to be an eye opener to the government regarding the human -elephant conflict....
