President to meet BASL over proposed judicial retirement age changes
Sri Lanka, Aug. 11 -- President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is scheduled to meet representatives of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) tomorrow to discuss the proposed constitutional amendment concerning the retirement age of judges.
The BASL had previously communicated its official position on the matter to the President in writing.
The meeting follows the gazetting of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill, introduced under the directives of Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara.
Under the proposed amendment, the mandatory retirement age would be increased to 67 for Supreme Court judges and 65 for Court of Appeal judges.
