Sri Lanka, July 6 -- Police opened fire to bring a tense situation under control at the Negombo Prison today after clashes broke out between inmates and prison officers, leaving several officers injured.

The unrest erupted when a confrontation between inmates and prison officers escalated inside the prison premises, prompting authorities to seek police assistance.

Several prison officers were reportedly injured during the incident, while police opened fire to disperse the inmates and restore order.
