Sri Lanka, Aug. 8 -- More than 749 people have died in motorcycle accidents in Sri Lanka during the first seven months of this year, prompting authorities to reiterate the importance of wearing SLS-certified safety helmets.

Director of the Road Safety, Traffic and Control Division of the Sri Lanka Police, Senior Superintendent of Police Manoj Ranagala, said 1,626 road accidents had been recorded between January 1 and July 31, 2026, compared with 1,585 during the corresponding period last year.

He said 749 people had died in motorcycle accidents during the period, including 13 persons below the age of 18.
