Sri Lanka, Sept. 22 -- A total of 1,897 persons have lost their lives in road accidents over the past nine months, Traffic Police Director SSP Manoj Ranagala revealed.

Speaking to a TV channel, SSP Ranagala said the number of reported road accidents has risen to 1,781 this year, highlighting a worrying upward trend. He emphasised the urgent need for stricter law enforcement and more responsible driving to curb the rising toll.

The Traffic Police have installed 70 high-speed detection machines across the country to monitor reckless driving, SSP Ranagala added.

Officials also noted a sharp increase in motorcycle accidents in 2025, with 923 accidents reported, resulting in 514 fatalities.
