Colombo, Aug. 24 -- Opposition parties today held a joint press conference in Colombo strongly condemning the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, accusing the government of weaponizing the law to suppress political opponents.

Speaking under the theme "Let's Defeat the Constitutional Dictatorship", leaders from several opposition groups claimed the detention of Mr. Wickremesinghe was part of a broader effort to undermine democratic institutions and silence dissenting voices.

They warned that such actions pose a serious threat to the rule of law and called on the public to resist what they described as an erosion of democratic freedoms.
