NMSJ warns 22A could place SC in conflict of interest
Sri Lanka, Aug. 19 -- The National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) has urged lawmakers to reconsider the proposed extension of the terms of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges, warning that the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution could place the Supreme Court in a position where it may have to hear a case concerning the tenure of its own judges.
In a statement, NMSJ General Secretary Sunil Jayasekara said the proposed amendment should be considered through a careful, multi-party discussion involving all relevant stakeholders, with particular attention given to protecting the independence and integrity of the Judiciary.
