Sri Lanka, Aug. 4 -- The Cabinet has approved the proposal to present the Motor Vehicles (Inspection) Regulations No. 03 of 2026 to Parliament for approval, introducing a formal system to test the roadworthiness of vehicles used for passenger transport and other special services.

The regulations, published through Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2489/22 dated May 19, 2026, were introduced under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act (Chapter 203).

The move follows investigations by Motor Vehicle Inspectors into several recent serious and controversial road accidents, which revealed that technical defects in the operating condition of vehicles had contributed to many of the incidents.
