Sri Lanka, Oct. 6 -- Sri Lanka Police have intensified enforcement of mandatory seat belt regulations on expressways, with nearly 3,000 people already facing legal action for failing to comply with the rules.

The regulations require all passengers travelling in vehicles on expressways, including those seated in the rear, to wear seat belts.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety W. P. J. Senadheera said the enforcement was aimed primarily at protecting lives rather than penalising motorists.
