Srilanka, Sept. 27 -- A lorry transporting chickens to be slaughtered bumped into a wild elephant crossing the road at the Rideeella Forest Reserve on the Dambulla-Bakamuna highway.

The lorry veered off the road and toppled, causing injuries to the driver, who was admitted to Dambulla Base Hospital. However, hundreds of chickens died in the incident, while the jumbo ran back into the jungle.

The lorry's cleaner told police that the wild elephant suddenly ran across the road, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Wildlife officers who rushed to the scene and carried out an inspection said it was yet to be established whether the lorry actually collided with the elephant and veered off the road, or whether the driver lost...
