Sri Lanka, Sept. 20 -- An amber advisory for severe lightning has been issued for the Uva and Eastern provinces and the Mullaittivu, Vavuniya and Polonnaruwa districts, with the warning remaining valid until 11.30 p.m. today (20).

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre issued the advisory at 11.00 a.m., warning that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several places in the affected areas.

Temporary, localised strong winds may also occur during thunderstorms, the advisory said.

The Department of Meteorology urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimise the risk of damage and injury caused by lightning.
