Sri Lanka, March 4 -- Iran has delayed the state funeral of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, originally scheduled for Wednesday evening in Tehran, citing expectations of an exceptionally large public turnout, according to state television.
"The farewell ceremony for the martyred Imam has been postponed. A new date will be announced later," Iranian state TV said on Wednesday, days after Khamenei was killed in joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes over the weekend.
Khamenei, 86, who led Iran since 1989 and built his leadership around staunch opposition to the United States and Israel, was killed on Saturday in aerial strikes carried out by U.S. and Israeli forces, Iranian state media reported.
