Sri Lanka, Oct. 27 -- An Indian national has been arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for attempting to smuggle a large quantity of heroin into Sri Lanka.

The 39-year-old passenger had arrived from Kuala Lumpur on SriLankan Airlines flight UL 315 on the evening of October 26. During a detailed inspection, the Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Unit discovered 2.8 kilograms of heroin concealed in a specially-modified compartment of his checked luggage.

The seized narcotics, weighing 2,832 grams, are valued at nearly Rs. 85 million.

Customs officials said the suspect will be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau along with the illegal substance for further investigations and legal action.
