Sri Lanka, March 10 -- Former Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Criminal Investigation Department, Prasad Ranasinghe, was arrested by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption on corruption charges.

The Commission alleged that Ranasinghe influenced the investigation into the theft of the 'Sandagala', a historical archaeological artefact located near the entrance gate of the palace of Sri Weera Parakrama Narendra Singha, the last king of the Sinhala dynasty of the Kingdom of Kandy. The artefact was situated at the Uda Maluwa Archaeological Site in Kundasale.

Police said that the former DIG allegedly assisted some suspects involved in the theft to evade arrest.
