Sri Lanka, Sept. 10 -- Former Mayor of the Bandarawela Municipal Council Janaka Nishantha Ratnayake has been arrested in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged financial fraud and the forgery of documents at the municipal council.

The arrest was made last night (9) by officers of the Bandarawela Special Crime Investigation Unit.

According to police, the arrest followed investigations and interrogations involving two revenue inspectors and several clerical employees of the municipal council. The employees had been arrested several months ago in connection with the same case and remain in remand custody.

The former mayor is currently being questioned by officers of the Special Crime Investigation Unit.
