Sri Lanka, April 13 -- Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) have carried out 967 food safety raids islandwide during the ongoing festive season, resulting in 817 legal cases being filed against violators.

The special inspection programme, launched on April 1, is being conducted by a team of 2,300 PHIs with the aim of ensuring food safety across the country during the festive period.

They stated that inspections will continue until the end of the season.

As of April 11, the PHIs have inspected a total of 11,604 food-related establishments. During these operations, 3,045 food items were taken into custody, while 2,299 were destroyed due to being unfit for consumption.
