Srilanka, Aug. 28 -- Families of individuals subjected to enforced disappearances have been engaged in a lifelong struggle to unearth what happened to their loved ones during different conflict periods in Sri Lanka's history. From the 1971 JVP insurrections onwards to the end of the 30-year armed conflict to the recent prison riots, these families have been agitating on the streets, holding demonstrations with a unified voice to seek justice for their loved ones. As a result of these struggles and international interventions such as the Geneva UN Human Rights Council, the Office on Missing Persons (OMP) Act No. 14 of 2016 was passed in Parliament in 2016 and the office was subsequently established in 2018.
