Education reforms needed to reduce student stress, Experts warn
Sri Lanka, June 12 -- Health authorities have raised concerns over a rising trend of depression among schoolchildren, with reports indicating that six out of every ten children are experiencing severe depressive symptoms.
Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist attached to the University of Kelaniya, Miyuru Chandradasa, said the heavy school syllabus is a major contributing factor to the growing mental health burden among students.
He said the urgent need for education reforms aimed at reducing academic pressure and creating a more balanced learning environment.
He further said that integrating mental health education into the school curriculum is essential to effectively address psychological challenges faced by children and adolescents.
