Sri Lanka, Aug. 12 -- The Constitutional Council is scheduled to convene this afternoon to consider the nomination of Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya as the next Inspector General of Police (IGP), following a recommendation by the President.
The Council previously met on August 7 to deliberate on the nomination but failed to reach a final decision.
The vacancy arose after the former IGP, Deshabandu Tennakoon, was removed by the President, following a parliamentary motion endorsing his dismissal.
Ahead of today's meeting, the Constitutional Council has requested detailed reports on Weerasuriya from several institutions, including the judiciary, the National Police Commission and the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
