Sri Lanka, Feb. 3 -- The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has successfully recovered more than Rs. 90 million from individuals and businesses who obtained electricity illegally during 2025, officials said.
The CEB's Special Investigation Unit (SIU) conducted island-wide raids last year, uncovering 1,259 cases of meter tampering and 72 cases of illegal electricity connections, commonly known as "hooks." These fraudulent activities caused substantial financial losses to the state-owned utility.
According to Indika Fernando, Manager of the SIU, a total of Rs. 92,770,061.21 was recovered during the operations, of which Rs. 90,242,561.21 was compensation for damages to the CEB and Rs. 2,527,500 represented court fees.
