Sri Lanka, Sept. 10 -- The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Sri Lanka has called for an impartial investigation into the mass graves discovered in the Jaffna Peninsula, stressing that the long-running excavations at Chemmani must be completed to establish the truth and ensure accountability.

In a statement issued following its plenary session held from August 18 to 20, the Conference said the issue of mass graves and alleged crimes associated with Chemmani required serious attention.

The bishops said there were also other unresolved incidents involving terrorism and mass killings during the nearly three-decade civil war, as well as acts of terrorism that occurred before the conflict.
