Sri Lanka, Aug. 6 -- The water levels of the Castlereagh and Maussakelle reservoirs are nearing critical levels due to ongoing heavy rainfall in the western slopes of the Central Highlands, engineers in charge of the reservoirs reported today.

As of this morning, the Castlereagh reservoir was recorded at 3.5 feet above its overflow level, while the Maussakelle reservoir had reached 5.3 feet above its overflow point, according to engineers monitoring the situation.

In response to the rising water levels, engineers from the Ceylon Electricity Board said hydroelectric power stations including Canyon, Laxapana, New Laxapana, Polpitiya, and Wimalasurendra are now operating at maximum capacity to optimize electricity generation.
