Sri Lanka, July 14 -- The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the awarding of the contract for the construction of a new building with 36 check-in counters and six boarding gates at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake, as part of efforts to expand the airport's passenger handling capacity.

The project involves the construction of a new facility connecting the departure terminal directly to aircraft and is expected to enhance passenger processing and boarding operations.

Cabinet approval to commence the procurement process for the project was granted at its meeting on February 9, 2025, under the airport infrastructure development programme.
