Sri Lanka, May 12 -- The Cabinet has approved a proposal to amend the Animals Act No. 29 of 1958 to expand the definition of "animal" by including pigs, goats and sheep in addition to cattle and beef.
The proposal, submitted by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation, received in-principle approval from the Cabinet on December 1, 2025.
Following the approval, the Legal Draftsman prepared the amended Bill in all three languages, while clearance for the draft legislation has also been granted by the Attorney General.
Accordingly, the Cabinet approved publishing the amended Bill in the Government Gazette before submitting it to Parliament for approval.
