Sri Lanka, July 29 -- A police constable has died by suspected suicide after shooting himself with his official service firearm.

According to the police, the deceased officer was attached to the Panadura Walana Anti-Corruption Strike Unit.

The incident occurred early this morning (29) near the main gate of the police station, where the constable allegedly shot himself using his T-56 assault rifle.

After sustaining critical injuries in the shooting, the officer was admitted to the Panadura Base Hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

Police said the deceased was a 28-year-old resident of the Peradeniya area.
