Sri Lanka, July 30 -- The Church of Ceylon (Anglican Church of Sri Lanka) today opposed the government's move to extend the retirement age of appellate court judges and urged it to withdraw the proposed constitutional amendment.

In a statement, the Church expressed concern and disappointment over the Cabinet's decision to proceed with the amendment, warning that such a move could undermine the rule of law and public confidence in the independence and impartiality of the judiciary.

The Church said it had hoped that the President and the Cabinet would consider the concerns raised by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, the wider legal community and civil society regarding the potential impact of the proposed amendment.
