Mumbai, Sept. 26 -- Websol Energy System has secured an allotment of about 54.2 acres from the Government of West Bengal for a planned greenfield solar manufacturing facility at Falta Industrial Park in Kolkata. The project will expand the company's manufacturing presence in the state and create a larger integrated base for solar production in eastern India.
The proposed facility will have 4 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity and 4 GW of solar module manufacturing capacity. Construction is planned in two phases, with each phase comprising 2 GW of capacity. The project will support Websol's expansion as domestic solar manufacturing grows to meet India's renewable energy requirements.
Websol selected the location after evaluating sites close to its existing operations at the Falta Special Economic Zone. The company's established presence in the area provides access to skilled manpower, supplier relationships and knowledge of the local industrial ecosystem. These existing resources are intended to assist the execution of the new facility compared with development in an entirely new location.
Sohan Lal Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Websol Energy System, said the land allotment marked the next stage of the company's solar manufacturing journey, which began in West Bengal in the mid-1990s. He said the project would allow Websol to operate at a substantially larger scale while remaining close to its existing workforce, operating base and industrial network.
Executive Director Sanjana Khaitan said the company's immediate priority would be to move from land allotment to construction, commissioning and utilisation. She said performance would be assessed not only by installed capacity but also by the efficiency with which that capacity generated production, deliveries and revenue. The project forms part of Websol's plans for achieving its 2028 targets.
