Mumbai, Aug. 3 -- The transport and logistics sector accounts for the largest share of the Centre's monitored infrastructure pipeline, with projects valued at Rs 22.32 trillion (tn) of a total Rs 40.54 tn, the latest Flash Report from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) said. The report uses the Project Assessment and Monitoring Interactive Network Analysis (PAIMANA) portal to track Central Sector projects and monitor implementation, expenditure and progress.

As of June 2026, PAIMANA monitored 1,847 projects across 17 ministries and departments, with cumulative expenditure of Rs 21.97 tn, representing 54.18 per cent of revised project costs. The transport and logistics segment comprised 1,341 projects, or 73 per cent of the monitored portfolio, covering roads, railways, aviation, urban public transport, shipping and inland waterways.

Within ministries, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways led with 1,022 projects and a revised cost of Rs 9.89 tn, or 24 per cent of the total. The Ministry of Railways had 255 projects at Rs 8.69 tn, representing 21 per cent, while the Ministry of Coal accounted for 121 projects worth Rs 2.22 tn. The energy sector had 207 projects at Rs 10.38 tn.

Around 709 projects, or nearly 39 per cent of the monitored portfolio, had exceeded 80 per cent physical progress, and 337 projects had crossed 80 per cent completion financially, signalling sustained expenditure across major segments. The report observed that physical and financial progress generally move together, although financial spending is often higher in early stages because of upfront construction and procurement.

In June, PAIMANA added 17 projects, including 14 under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and three under the Department of Telecommunications. Additions included Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata Greenfield Highway packages of Rs 1,856.12 crore (Rs 18.56 billion (bn)), Rs 1,525.52 crore (Rs 15.26 bn) and a Southern Ludhiana Bypass package of Rs 1,424.55 crore (Rs 14.25 bn). The report also cited commissioning of the Rajasthan Refinery Project at Rs 79,459 crore (Rs 794.59 bn) and recorded 769 mega projects and 1,078 major projects with original costs of Rs 30.51 tn and Rs 5.10 tn respectively.
