Mumbai, Oct. 28 -- JSW Utkal Steel has awarded SMS Group a contract to supply a large-scale sinter plant for its upcoming 13.2 mn tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel complex in Odisha. The project will add to the long-standing partnership between the two companies and will become the third sinter plant of this scale within the JSW Group.

In the first phase, SMS Group will install a travelling-grate sinter plant with an annual production capacity of approximately 5.75 MTPA. The facility will have a strand area of 496 square metres and is scheduled to be commissioned in May 2028.

The scope of supply includes complete design and engineering, equipment, electrical systems and Level 1 and Level 2 automation. The plant will also feature Optimus Sinter, a digital solution developed by SMS Group to improve productivity, optimise fuel consumption and provide real-time process insights without requiring additional hardware.

The project will use the Emission- and Energy-Optimized Sintering (EOS) system. The technology recirculates off-gases and recovers waste heat, helping to reduce sulphur oxides and carbon dioxide emissions while lowering solid fuel costs. It is designed to support more efficient sinter production and improve the plant's environmental performance.

SMS Group said the combination of advanced sintering technology and digital tools would strengthen operational reliability, energy efficiency and production performance. For JSW Utkal Steel, the facility forms part of its greenfield integrated steelworks under development in Odisha, while the order reinforces SMS Group's position in agglomeration technologies and digital solutions for the steel industry.
