Mumbai, Sept. 2 -- Ranchi is set to receive its first 10-lane smart road, a project costing Rs 1.77 billion (bn) intended to enhance connectivity, safety and commuter convenience across key civic corridors. The tender has been awarded to the West Bengal-based contractor Ramchandra Pal and survey work has commenced with the State Highway Authority of Jharkhand overseeing field activities. Work allocation has been completed and preparatory mobilisation is under way ahead of civil construction.
The alignment will begin near Vivekananda School Morh beyond the Old Assembly area and will link landmarks including Jagannath Temple, the High Court and the Assembly before reaching Nayasarai ROB. The principal carriageway comprises a six-kilometre (6.089 km) six-lane section from Vivekananda School Morh to Nayasarai ROB, accompanied by service roads and two-lane paved shoulders to manage local traffic and access. A further two-kilometre (2.12 km) stretch through Nayasarai to the Ring Road will be widened to two lanes with paved shoulders.
The design incorporates a dedicated cycle track, wider footpaths and improved service roads to enhance pedestrian and non-motorised mobility. Solar panels will be mounted above the cycle track and the energy generated will be used to illuminate the corridor, adding a renewable-energy component to the scheme. Large-scale plantation is planned along the median and both sides of the road and flowering plants will be introduced to improve the appearance of the corridor.
Authorities expect the smart road to improve urban mobility while providing pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, green spaces and modern lighting for safety and comfort. Benches, shelter-like structures and other street furniture will be installed to support resting areas and walking facilities will receive special attention to encourage foot traffic. With surveys under way and contracts in place, project execution is anticipated to proceed in phases with the State Highway Authority monitoring progress and coordinating with local agencies.
